Bone Mineral Density Study:
A Bone Mineral Density Test, also called a DEXA Scan is a form of X-ray that is quick, painless, and requires no special preparation or medications. A DEXA Scan is an accurate way to determine osteopenia (thin bones) and osteoporosis (brittle bones at risk for fracture).
DEXA scanning is part of routine preventative testing in adults who are at increased risk for fracture due to age or medical conditions. You may be asked to repeat DEXA scanning annually or every two years, as either judging response to treatment or ongoing screening. Ask your doctor about screening and how often you should be screened.
